Sunday, a German delegation arrived in Tanzania for bilateral Government consultations on development cooperation for the coming years 2012-2015. Ambassador Klaus-Peter Brandes is confident that “the visit of the delegation will further deepen the German cooperation with Tanzania”.

The delegation is headed by Dr. Ralph Mohs, the Head of East Africa Division of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, and consists of officials from the German Ministries, from GIZ, the KfW (German Bank for Development), as well as the German Embassy in Dar es Salaam.

The discussions with the responsible Tanzanian Ministries will concentrate on the focal areas of German development cooperation: Health, Water, Support to Local Government and General Budget Support. The German support will be aligned to the Tanzanian strategies, and focus on supporting the implementation of these strategies.

The bilateral development cooperation between Tanzania and the Federal Republic of Germany started way back in the 1960’s. Over the last five decades, German bilateral cooperation with Tanzania has amounted to almost € 1.6 billion (2.88 Trillion TSH). Today, Tanzania counts as the largest beneficiary of German development cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa. The last three-year bilateral agreement in 2009 was over 147 Mio Euros ( 323,4 Billion TSH) for the three focal areas and an extra 30 Mio Euros (66 Billion TSH) for General Budget Support.

The visit of the delegation prepares the final Tanzanian-German Government negotations on development cooperation, planned to take place in Dar es Salaam in March 2012.

On Thursday, the German delegation will travel to Arusha to hold talks with the Secretary General of the EAC, Mr. Sezibera on the future cooperation with the EAC. Germany has been supporting the EAC Secretariat with 14 Mio Euros (30,8 Billion TSH) in the years 2009-2011.

This amount is topped up by 14 Mio Euros for the construction of the new EAC headquarters in Arusha which will house the EAC Secretariat, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the East African Court of Justice from 2012.
