On January 25, a new modern HIV/AIDS care and treatment clinic (CTC) was launched at the Ndala Mission Hospital in Nzega District, Tabora Region.

The clinic was sponsored by the American people through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF).

The inauguration ceremony was presided by Nzega District Commissioner Florencia Horombe; Lab Program Manager for the CDC Tanzania, Epafra Anga; and Associate Director of Field Programs for EGPAF, John Stephens.

The modern facility represents another milestone in the Nzega District, bringing much needed services for HIV prevention, care, and treatment to over 28,000 people in the surrounding community. The launch event featured performances by local dance and drum groups and speeches from the guests of honor.

Activities also included a tour of the facilities which was followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The clinic provides free life saving AIDS treatment services with Antiretroviral Drugs (ARV) for both adults and children administered by a well-trained and skilled medical staff.

The community benefits from a host of other free services, including HIV counseling and testing, TB/HIV services, programs to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child (PMTCT), and support services for pregnant women and HIV positive individuals.

District Commissioner Horombe thanked the American people for the support provided to the people of Tabora through the care and treatment clinic.

The United States of America is a global leader in combating HIV/AIDS worldwide. Through PEPFAR, the largest initiative in history to combat a single disease, CDC has opened over 115 health care facilities across Tanzania. The United States will continue to work closely with the United Republic of Tanzania to strengthen the health of its citizens and to fulfill our common vision of a “Tanzania free of HIV.” “Today we inaugurate this facility that will increase access to HIV treatment and we celebrate what this means for the residents of Nzega,” said Epafra Anga.
