Faroque Abdela is among the most recognisable Tanzanian top fashion designers, born in Zanzibar and raised in England. His signature look designs make them be worn by many legends and showcased not only in Tanzania but also in East Africa and Europe in general. QUESTION: What is your main source of inspiration in designing?

ANSWER: To start with, the African women, art, dance, traditional African clothes.

Q: How did you get started?

A: My father was a tailor, my grandfather was an embroiderer, my great grandfather was also an embroiderer, so it was natural for me to follow in their footsteps.

Q: Do you think you’re a good designer?

A: To last this long and to have my designs worn by legends I must be a good designer.

Q:  If you couldn’t be a designer, what else would you be?

A: An artist of some sort, I have always been fascinated on human form, the way it moves.

Q: What’s the best thing about being a designer?

A: Satisfactions, to see people you don’t know wearing your designs.

Q: What do you do in your free time?

A: I read a lot especially biography

Q:  Is there anything people find characteristically original about your designs?

A: Oh, I have been lucky from the start by creating a signature look.

Q: How do you bring your inspiration into reality?

A: By creating beautifully work.

Q: What’s make you unique from other designers?

A: As I said before, having a signature look, people recognise my designs.

Q: What do you think of skinny models and trend to control models weight?

A: Not very good, I mean not healthy.

Q:  Tell me your recent goal you accomplished?

A: Establishing an NGO (non-governmental organization) for prisoners in Zanzibar.

Q: Any last word?

A: I  love Zanzibar.
