Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever, Executive Director of the National Council of Negro Women, visited Tanzania from August 11 - 17. Her trip was sponsored by the American people through the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs' (IIP) Speaker Program. During her visit, she offered presentations to audiences in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, where she urged all citizens to take an active role in promoting women's empowerment in Tanzania.
As part of her visit, the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam hosted a dinner for Dr. Jones-DeWeever with Tanzanian women leaders from the fields of medicine, art and private sector. In Dar es Salaam, her speaking engagements included presentations at the Center for Foreign Relations (CFR), the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESFR), the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP), and ARDHI University. In addition, she also offered a presentation at the U.S. Embassy for women students from the Dar es Salaam School of Journalism and conducted interviews with Capital TV's "Monday Agenda Program" and on 102.6 CHOICE FM radio.
In Mwanza, Dr. Jones-DeWeever spoke at Saint Augustine University and at the Kivulini's Women's Rights Organization, whose executive director, Maimuna Kanyamala, was the recipient of the U.S. Embassy's 2011 Woman of Courage Award for her efforts to promote women's rights in Tanzania. She also attended a dinner with Mwanza women entrepreneurs, where they exchanged views on women's challenges and priorities in the Lake Region.
In every venue, Dr. Jones-DeWeever underscored that all citizens, including men, must take an active role in promoting women's empowerment and highlighted that "true empowerment means women should make their own decisions around issues and act on those opportunities without fear." Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt noted: "Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever's trip to Tanzania underscores the American people's commitment to promote women's empowerment in Tanzania. Her message raises awareness that the immense talents and contributions of women are necessary to promote development in all nations, including Tanzania, as mentors and that men must take a central role in promoting women's rights."
The National Council of Negro Women is a membership and umbrella organization which galvanizes the collective power of more than 240 local sections along with 34 national African-American women’s organizations which together represent four million women of African descent in the U.S. and throughout the diaspora. Prior to serving in the role of Executive Director, Dr. Jones-DeWeever served as the organization’s Research and Policy Center Director and also held appointments with the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.
