THE Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Tanzania, Ambassador Tim Clarke together with the Kinondoni District Commissioner, Hon. Jordan Rugimbana, today (Thursday October 6, 2011) officially launched a Road Safety Awareness Campaign in Dar es Salaam.

The campaign, which coincides with the celebrations to mark the 2011 Road Safety Week, has been jointly prepared by Ministry of Transport with financial support from the European Union at the tune of about Tshs. 250 million.

The Road Safety Awareness Campaign is an initiative aimed at exploring ways to increase public awareness on the risks associated with vehicles and travel in Tanzania. The project will address some of the key safety related challenges and deliver messages that motivate changes in attitude and the adoption of safer behaviour amongst the travelling public.

This is a two-month pilot project, confined to Dar es Salaam area, focusing on the safety of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and children, who constitute the group at highest risk of being involved in a road crash.

It will use TV and radio spots, roadside billboards located on the busiest roads of the city, posters, leaflets and other communication channels to ensure maximum outreach and impact.

"The impact of the campaign will be carefully evaluated and it will provide a basis for further actions supporting the implementation of Tanzania’s Road Safety Strategy," said Ambassador Clarke adding: "As one of the prime supporters in this country of the development of improved infrastructure, you can count on the support of the EU to promote road safety."

On his part, Honourable Rugimbana on behalf of the Government appreciated the support by the EU in ensuring road safety in Tanzania and asked for support from all road users to make the campaign a success.

"We are all witnesses. Road accidents are a very big problem in Tanzania and Dar es Salaam leads the in terms of accidents and death toll. The campaign is so timely and I urge all road users to take its messages seriously. I ask the traffic police officers to take stern measures against all drivers who have refused to abide by the law and respect other road users," he said.
