A senior Tanzanian justice sector official will visit the United States of America to participate in a program titled "International Crime Issues" under the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) from October 24 through November 3, 2011.

Mr. Anselm Daniel Mwampoma serves as Assistant Director of Public Prosecution at the Attorney General's Chambers, where he is the third ranking official at the prosecutor's office.  He is responsible for the prosecution of transnational crimes, including piracy, narcotics, terrorism, cyber crime, money laundering, and trafficking in persons.

Participants will examine the structure of the U.S. criminal justice system and how its principles are applied to the prosecution of international crimes and explore U.S. foreign policy priorities to build global cooperation against terrorism.  They will also discuss the impact of international crime on the political, economical, and social stability of the global community and the importance of balancing law enforcement and security measures with the protection of civil liberties in democratic societies.

Public Affairs Officer Ms. Dana L. Banks welcomed Mr. Mwanpoma to the U.S. Embassy prior to his trip and noted: "This program will provide participants with a greater understanding of the challenges faced by all nations in meeting the threats and effects of international crimes.  As Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt has said, the United States is proud to partner with the United Republic of Tanzania in its commitment to combat international crimes.  Among many areas, our partnership is also reflected in Mr. Mwampoma's participation in this critical exchange program."

Mr. Mwampoma will be joined by 24 participants from Bangladesh, Barbados, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Gambia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Jordan, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Romania, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Taiwan, Turkey and Uganda.  The program will take place in Washington, D.C. and the states of Michigan, Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, and California.

The International Visitors Leadership Program is sponsored by the American people through the U.S. Department of State. It is intended to facilitate personal and professional contacts between the people of the United States and Tanzania, and is part of overall U.S. Government direct and multilateral assistance to Tanzania of over 850 billion Tanzanian shillings this fiscal year.
