On January 18, a new modern HIV/AIDS care and treatment center (CTC) was launched at the Nyamagana District Hospital in Mwanza Region sponsored by the American people through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and AIDS Relief.  The center inauguration was presided over by Care and Treatment Specialist for the CDC Tanzania Dr. John Kahamele, Regional Commissioner Evarist Ndikilo, and Deputy Chief of Party for AIDS Relief Mwemezi Ngemera.

The modern clinic represents another milestone in the Mwanza Region, bringing much needed services for HIV prevention, care, and treatment to over 210,700 people in the surrounding community.  The launch event featured performances by local dance and drum groups, and speeches and testimonials by guests and people living with HIV/AIDS.  The center provides free life saving AIDS treatment services with Antiretroviral Drugs (ARV) for both adults and children administered by a well-trained and skilled medical staff.  The community benefits from a host of other free services, including HIV counseling and testing, TB/HIV services, programs to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child (PMTCT), and support services for pregnant women and HIV positive individuals.

“Today we inaugurate this facility that will increase access to HIV treatment and we celebrate what this means for the residents of Mwanza,” said Dr. John Kahemele.

Regional Commissioner Ndikilo thanked the American people for the support provided to the people of Mwanza through the Care and Treatment Clinic.

The United States of America is a global leader in combating HIV/AIDS worldwide.  Through PEPFAR, the largest initiative in history to combat a single disease, CDC has opened over 115 health care facilities across Tanzania.  The United States will continue to work closely with the United Republic of Tanzania to strengthen the health of its citizens and to fulfill our common vision of a “Tanzania free of HIV.”
