Big Brother StarGame promised more twists and turns than ever before – and Sunday night’s first live eviction show (13 May, 20:00 CAT on DStv Channel 198) certainly delivered on that promise! Tanzanian duo Hilda and Julio, along with Zimbabwe’s Teclar, were evicted from the Downville house after just seven days – while Teclar’s sister Maneta moved into the Upville house. And as the Downville housemates struggled to come to terms with the first eviction, they were given yet more to ponder as Sierra Leone’s Dalphin & Zainab and Liberia’s Yadel & Luke were randomly nominated for eviction on next Sunday’s show.
The Downville housemates play as couples, but viewers vote for individual housemates and the moment the housemates leave Downville, they are treated as individuals. This week, Maneta received the most country votes from across Africa, making her the most popular housemate of the week – meaning she joined the Upville house and is still in with a shot at the USD 300 000 prize.
IK kicked off the first Big Brother StarGame eviction show by jiving his way onto stage to the booming beats of DJ Sphectacular before South African Music Award winners Mi Casa rocked the house with their hit “These Streets”. He then gave viewers a quick review of what had happened in both houses during the first week – which included soapy fun, a shocking quiz and an off-the-chain ‘Pirate Party’. Both sets of housemates won their wagers, while Roki seems to be making serious waves in Upville with his wacky behaviour. In Downville, Esperanza’s request to voluntarily leave the house due to personal reasons – and her subsequent decision to stay on with partner Seydou – dominated the week’s proceedings.
After catching all the housemate hi-jinks, it was time to get down to business. IK asked the nominated pairs – Teclar & Maneta (Zimbabwe) and Hilda & Julio (Tanzania) - to stand. After a long pause, he invited the Zimbabwean duo to join him on stage, as Hilda & Julio breathed sizeable sighs of relief.
After quizzing Maneta & Teclar about their time in the house, IK then dropped a bomb and asked Julio & Hilda to join him on stage too. He then summoned the auditors from Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo, who handed him an envelope containing this week’s voting results. After confirming with the auditor that the results had been verified, he read out the result – and asked Maneta to leave the stage. She emerged, surprised, into the Upville house and greeted all the VIP housemates as her sister Teclar looked on tearfully from the stage.
Having seen Maneta settle in, IK broke the news to Teclar that she had been evicted from the Big Brother house. Hilda and Julio were left standing on stage – but IK told first Julio and then Hilda that they had also been evicted.
Mi Casa took over the stage again as the eviction news settled in and performed “Heavenly Sent” before IK asked “bite-size” Buhle and the auditor from Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo to begin the random nomination process. The first ball out of the mixing cube bore the name “Sierra Leone”, meaning that Dalphin & Zainab would be up for eviction this week. Big Brother wasn’t done yet, though, instructing IK to ask Buhle to draw another ball from the cube – and put another housemate duo up for eviction. The ball that popped out was labeled “Liberia” – a fact verified by the auditor – meaning that Yadel & Luke would also be up for eviction this week.
This week’s trio of evictions and Maneta’s addition to the Upville crew means that 24 housemates remain in the Downville house, while there are now 8 housemates in Upville – and they have 84 days to go in the game, in the battle for the USD 300 00 prize.
