Uganda's Zziwa elected EALA Speaker

Arusha, 5 June, 2012 (EANA)— Fourty-nine-year old M Margaret Zziwa today became the third Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and first woman since the revival of the regional body in 1999.

She defeated in a closely contested election her compatriot and earlier favorite Dora Byamakuma (40) in the second round after the first round failed to produce the minimum required votes.

Dora led the first round with 27 votes against Zziwa’s 18 votes but the latter came out strongly in the second round with 33 votes against Dora’s 12.

The first speaker of the Assembly was Abdulrahman Kinana from Tanzania followed by Abdirahim Abdi from Kenya who last week completed his non-renewable five-year term.

For the first time, there serious campaigning for the post of the Speaker from both the candidates.

Both possess vast experience in EAC regional integration and are loaded with heavy academic qualifications.

Byamukama holds Masters Degree in Law from the United States where as Zziwa shines with

 Master of Science (Applied Social Research) from Scotland among other educational qualifications. Both have wide publications and papers to their credit.

Both candidates in their campaign materials availed to the Independent East African News Agency (EANA) promised to build a vibrant Regional Assembly and further deepen and widen the EAC integration process.
 
The Speaker's election was followed by swearin-in ceremony of the elected EALA legislators.
