Rotary club of Dar es Salaam Launches Road Safety Campaign

In a move to lower the rate of accidents in our roads, The Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam in association with the Police force of Tanzania, is spearheading a public service campaign initiative towards driving while phoning and texting. The campaign with the theme slogan ‘Driving + Phone = Death’ is aimed and sensitizing drivers not to use their mobile phones while driving.

The President of Rotary club of Dsm Ms. Sharmila Bhatt said – the reason they launched the campaign – was to create awareness of what is slowly becoming a chronic problem and a danger to lives of other motorists not only just in Dar es Salaam but all over the country, that is phoning or texting while driving is not really worth a life. It is known that – A driver talking on a mobile is FOUR TIMES more likely to get into an accident and If you text while you drive you are EIGHT TIMES more likely to get into an accident.

The campaign is being supported by corporate companies and the Police force - who believes this sensitization, will assist in our roads being safe.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Mpinga said –  “Phoning and texting is causing so many accidents in this country and while legislation is being worked on our utmost concern currently is having citizens driving safely and hence we joined hands with Rotary club of Dar es Salaam in this endeavour” said the commissioner adding “When a citizen is educated in the matter of safety one generally heeds rather than enforcing legislation” he said. Commissioner Mpinga urged more institutions to support the police in its efforts to make our roads safer for all users.
