DISCUSSION ON EU-TANZANIA TRANSFER AGREEMENT WHICH ALLOWS TO TRIAL PIRATES CAPTURED BY EUROPEAN NAVAL FORCES IN TANZANIA COURTS

Hans Koeppel of the German Embassy in press conference for the role of EUNAVFOR, its cooperation with Tanzania and the recently signed European Union-Tanzania Transfer Agreement which allows to trial pirates, who are captured by European naval forces, in Tanzanians courts.

The Chargé d´Affaires a.i. Hans Koeppel from Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany welcomed the visit of the flagship as “an important sign of the common fight against piracy along the coast of the Indian Ocean”. He also talk about the aim of Task Force to fight against pirates with the countries bordering the coast of Indian Ocean including Tanzania.

Commander Force Force 465 Rear Admiral Jürgen zur Mühlen emphasized that the threat of piracy continues to exist. 10 days ago, the crew of Brandenburg boarded an Indian dhow which was formerly held hostage by pirates. The pirates fled from the captured dhow as EU naval forces intervened from the air and sea. “This event confirms that the piracy threat is still very real in the Indian Ocean. The deterrence and swift action by EU Naval Force once again denied the freedom of action to pirates”,
