67th UN Anniversary Week Kicks Off

- Environment should be conserved for sustainable livelihood

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations in Tanzania jointly organized a Press Conference today— the beginning of UN Week, to highlight key development issues, successes and challenges in the country.

The UN week this year is being celebrated on the theme of Changing Peoples’ Lives: Greening the Environment for Sustainable Livelihoods.

The week of 17-24 October rejuvenates the long standing collaboration between the Government of Tanzania and the United Nations, re-enforces the roles and responsibilities of joint partnership and strengthens commitment for successful implementation of the United Nations Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP 2011-2015) aligned with the Government’s development priorities for the country.

Highlighting on this important partnership and emphasizing upon the need to maintain a peaceful enabling environment for development activities, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. John M. Haule stated; “We should look at environmental degradation beyond famine and desertification.

The environmental degradation is linked to peace, security and stability. It is evident today that pressure for arable fertile land, green pastures and water sources amount for many inter and intra states conflicts currently taking place in Africa.

It is in our collective interest therefore to address the challenges of environmental degradation to ensure future sustainable peace, development and prosperity.”

Emphasizing on the theme and relevance of the UN Week, Alberic Kacou, the UN Resident Coordinator for Tanzania stated, “The global Climate Change, increasingly evident in the form of floods, droughts, environmental degradation along with our own home grown challenges, such as deforestation, water source encroachment and unchecked cultivation pose challenges for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

The UN recognizes that sustainable and environmentally sound development plays a key role in reinforcing and broadening the impact of economic growth.

Here, I would like to quote the UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon during his Rio +20 Earth Summit—For too long we have tried to
consume our way to prosperity. Look at the cost: polluted lands and oceans, climate change, growing scarcity of resources from food to land to fresh water, rampant inequality.

We need to invent a new model; a model that offers growth and social inclusion... that is more respectful of the planet's finite resources. Nature has been kind to human beings, but we have not been kind to nature."

The 2012 UN Week is being marked with several activities targeting the Youths, School Students, Academia, General Public and the Media. Among some outreach activities for communities and youths in partnership with the Youths of United Nations Association
(YUNA), the UN in Tanzania is organizing;

• An Exhibition (23-24 Oct), jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;

• A Public Debate (23 Oct), on the theme of the UN Week, for University Students and Youths in partnership with the Ministry of Environment.

The UN in Tanzania will be working closely with the National and International Media throughout the week to share the relevant development progress and challenges across various development sectors.

STATEMENT BY HON. BERNARD KAMILLIUS MEMBE (MP), MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION OF THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA at the recent 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly —

“My country will continue to support reform of the United Nations including the Delivering as One Initiative (DaO) which has been implemented with considerable success in Tanzania since 2007. The government will continue to support the DaO process including its continuation in programme countries. The endorsement of DaO by some Members of this august Assembly is a clear testimony of the value of this approach.”
