Tanzanian reporter, Finnigan wa Simbeye Attending Feeding the Future Reporting Tour in the United States

Public Affairs Officer Ms. Dana Banks welcomes Daily News journalist Mr. Finnigan wa Simbeye to the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam on October 5, 2011 prior to his trip to the U.S. under the U.S. Foreign Press Center's Reporting Tour Program titled "Feeding the Future: Meeting the Global Food Security Challenge."

The Embassy of the United States of America nominated Daily News journalist Mr. Finnigan wa Simbeye  to participate in the U.S. Foreign Press Center's Reporting Tour Program titled "Feeding the Future: Meeting the Global Food Security Challenge."  The tour will take Mr. Simbeye and participants from other nations from Des Moines, Iowa to Washington, D.C. from October 11 through October 18, 2011.
 
According to U.S. Embassy spokesperson Dana Banks, "At a time when food prices have reached record highs and famine is ravaging the horn of Africa, this reporting tour will help educate foreign audiences about America's role in global food security.  Global food security is a top U.S. government priority."  

The tour will begin with an overview of U.S. agriculture, exploring how food gets from the field to the plate.  The participants will also have a chance to meet with farmers, corporate executives, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), government officials, researchers, and academics to learn organic farming and safety net programs such as biotechnology, biofuels and commodities markets.

In Des Moines Mr. Simbeye will attend the Norman Borlaug International Symposium on October 13, 2011, where he and other participants will witness the awarding of the World Food Prize to former President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and former President of Ghana John Kufuor.  

During a pre-departure briefing at the U.S. Embassy on October 5, 2011 Mr. Simbeye thanked the American people and the U.S. Foreign Press Center for sponsoring the tour, saying, "I am very excited to get this opportunity to visit the U.S. with support from American people, which testifies to our two countries' brotherly relations.  I am looking forward to contributing to the development of Tanzania's agricultural sector through this program, which will provide me with the opportunity to meet journalist colleagues from other countries, meetings with some of the world's distinguished agricultural experts, activists, corporate executives and policy makers, with a focus on promoting food security through innovations in science and technology."
